Betsy Devos Seeks School Reform

Before becoming the current Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos was involved in a number of projects in her home state of Michigan and elsewhere in the United States. Along with her husband Dick, Mrs. Devos is engaged in a number of philanthropic projects through the Dick and Betsy Devos Family Foundation of which Betsy Devos was chairperson.

The Devos family has made a number of important charitable contributions to the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan which is their home. The most notable of these charitable endeavors was funding for one of the city’s primary medical centers.

In addition to her charitable activities, Betsy Devos worked as a prominent businesswoman. She was chairperson of the Windquest Group which invested in a number of projects throughout the United States.

Mrs. Devos is probably most well known for her work in the area of educational reform. She is a tireless advocate for school choice. Mrs. Devos believes that all parents should have the option to send their children to the best schools. She has been an advocate of school vouchers and the charter school movement.

When asked in a recent interview with the Philanthropy Roundtable about the state of school choice, Mrs. Devos expressed a great deal of optimism. According to Mrs. Devos, school choice, in some form or another, is a reality in at least 17 states and in the District of Columbia. She believes that the idea of school choice is very popular, and she sees the concept eventually expanding throughout the United States.

Betsy Devos views school choice as a matter of fairness. She points to the fact that her family was able to send their children to the best schools regardless of cost. She wants to make sure that even poorer families have the ability to get their children in to a school that is high-quality.

Mrs. Devos views the public school system as a failing system. She points to the statistics that show that many public schools have poor educational outcomes compared with many private schools.

In addition to her support of school vouchers, Betsy Devos is an advocate for those who choose homeschooling. She believes that it is a legitimate option for any parent who wants to take on the responsibility.

As the current Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos is now in a position to implement large parts of her educational agenda. Time will tell if she will be successful in spreading school choice principles throughout the nation.
