Kraft was born on June 5, 1941, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He entered Columbia University on an academic scholarship. On graduating in 1963, he attended Harvard business school and attained a master’s in Business Administration.
Kraft began his career with the Rand-Whitney Group, a Worcester-based packaging company owned by Hiatt, and in 1972 he founded International Forest Products (IFP). With IFP, he created the Kraft Group, which has become one of the world’s largest privately held companies. In 1989, Kraft helped in acquiring WNEV-TV, a Boston-based television station. He continued investing in the entertainment industry, buying several Boston radio stations.
Kraft has been a Patriots fan since childhood and a season ticket holder since 1971. He became the team’s owner on Jan 21, 1994, and he has been the sole owner of the Patriots since then.
One of his most important contributions to the Patriots has been to fund several new facilities, such as Gillette Stadium and Patriot Place in Foxborough. Robert Kraft has also helped fund the Kraft Sports Performance Center to help elite athletes. He was a driving force behind the construction of Gillette Stadium, which is where every Patriots home game takes place.
Kraft also serves on the board of directors for the Apollo Theater and The Engine, founded by MIT. He is a trustee for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where he established the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center. A trustee emeritus at Columbia and a trustee of Boston College. He received several awards, such as Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award and Theodore Roosevelt Award, and was the first to receive the Pro Football Writers Association’s George Halas Award.
